Process
Wolf Rose Studio is informed by a confluence of historical references that include the tea ceremony cups of the ninth century and the Dogu figures of Jomon-period Japan. Also pronounced is the influence of the Paleolithic Venus figurines dating to 20,000 BCE, some of the earliest depictions of the human body, with the suggestion of an ambiguously gendered torso that can also be perceived as a face. Both in shape and glazing technique, the imperfectly perfect thread of wabi-sabi runs through the collection. The patina projects a beauty that comes with age and the effects of daily use.
The pieces have utilitarian use and all reflect an underlying softness. Each is hand-built in a process that takes several weeks. The distinctive characteristics of the one-of-a-kind work reflect the subtle variations caused by the dampness of the clay, the temperature both outside and inside the studio, and the firing placement within the kiln. These biological reactions integrate with the visible finger marks on the piece and represent a connection to time & place and ultimately to the maker.
Wolf Rose pottery is made in New York City. We use a variety of clay bodies including stoneware, porcelain, and low-fire earthenware.
